Chapter 12

Mia

Mia was the strangest mix of turned on, freezing, and exhilarated.

The cold part was obvious: because it was cold. As. Hell. And getting colder by the minute.

After rescuing the twins, she and Kyle had hauled butt back towards the house, but the snow was coming down hard, hard enough that she was having trouble finding the road through the blinding sheet of white that obscured any semblance of a road.

The wind gusts were tearing through like they were on a mission to make their lives miserable, and they were succeeding. She’d bundled up before they’d left the house, and was wearing two pairs of pants, two shirts, a jacket, and a bigger jacket. Combined with some winter gloves and thick wool socks, she’d felt prepared for everything, but apparently, she wasn’t nearly as ready as she thought. Every few seconds, a particularly freezing gust would find a hole in her clothing armor, freezing her to the bone even as she sweated furiously under the warm parts. Fortunately, Kyle couldn’t tell.

Exhilarated, also duh. She wasn’t made for a boring indoor job. Predictability was awful to her, and there was nothing more exciting and unpredictable than faring out in the wilderness to rescue some animals before a storm landed.

She stomped on the gas, sending them hurtling through the icy wasteland. Her heart pounded in her chest, and it felt like her legs were screaming at her to do something, but all she did was let them bounce in a quick, tight motion.

This was why she did it, why she worked on farms instead of taking a “normal” career path: because in times like this, even with all the unpleasant parts, she felt alive. Free, and incredibly, indescribably, alive.

But, there was a third part of what she was feeling. She hazarded a quick glance over at her companion and felt a tightness coil around her inner thighs, working its way through her hips and making it hard to focus on anything else. She gritted her teeth and focused back on the road, or at least trying to keep them from sliding into a tree.

Kyle had changed dramatically since they’d met. He’d started off as this egotistical, distant asshat. Good-looking, sure, but fundamentally a nightmare to work with. And yet, over the past few weeks, he’d opened up, lost that protective shell of asshattery, and started to show his true, kind heart.

Right then, he was getting his butt handed to him by a couple baby sheep. When he’d reached down to pick them up after they’d found them, she’d almost laughed. She’d learned her lessons about how strong baby animals were. They weren’t like humans, all cute and cuddly and harmless. Taking candy from a baby might be easy, but taking candy from a baby animal was landing a one-way ticket to the ER. Their tiny little hooves struck with way more force than made a lick of sense, and they fought like their lives depended on it to avoid getting rescued.

She glanced over just in time to see one of them land a good gut shot, bleating in horror as it writhed.
